Der alte Elbtunnel - The old Elbe Tunnel, 1907 - 1911
The first tunnel under the Elbe river was built both for pedestrians and vehicles on behalf of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. There are two horizontal and parallel tubes with a length of 449 m each. The internal diameter is 5.60 m, with 8.0 m distance between the tube axes. Building for escalators at north bank of Elbe river. The building is on the top of a shaft with 22 m internal diameter. Entrance to the car escalators.
Under the river The south entrance to the escalator building. The tunnel is still in operation.
