China Fenghuoshan 1 338 m 4 905 m Under construction October 19 2002 saw the successful liking up of Fenghuoshan Tunnel, the highest among frozen earth tunnels of the world, marking important progress in the construction of Qinghai - Tibet Railway. Due to the extreme lack of oxygen inside the drilling site, oxygen generation machines had to be installed inside the tunnel so as to provide builders with enough oxygen to keep the drilling process as scheduled.

The main artery for East/West travel through Colorado is I-70, 450 miles of Interstate highway stretching from Utah to Kansas. At the 1/2 way point is the Eisenhower/Johnson Memorial Tunnel, a marvel of engineering which took 11 years to complete. Situated at 11, 112 feet above sea level, it is the highest vehicular tunnel in the world. Its twin 2 lane bores are 1.7 miles long.
Tajikistan Anzob 5000 m 3 372 m 2006 The tunnel will open a permanent road between Khujand, Dushanbe, Kulob, and Khorugh. The construction was stopped during the 1992-1997 civil war in Tajikistan. It was resumed in 1997.
